The Summer School information can be found on www.manchester.ac.uk/summerschool. It is a 3-week programme from 8-26 July and English requirement is 大学英语六级或者大学英语专业四级. On successful completion of the programme, students will receive 20 UK credits. The International Summer School includes: 'Manchester: Original/Modern': As the first city of the industrial revolution, Manchester is proud of its status as the world's first 'original modern' city. Through a series of lectures, seminars and visits, we look at the ways in which industrialisation affected the lives of the workers, the factory owners and the aristocracy. We also look at the ways in which people sought to interpret and understand those changes through literature and art. ‘The “Real” Downton Abbey’: This unit examines the ‘stately home’ as a statement of cultural, social and political power. We will visit a British ‘stately home’ as a way of exploring the relationship between architecture and art and economic, social and political power. 'Worlds of Sport': This unit examines the role of sport within British popular culture. We explore the historical development of football from a leisure pursuit to a multi-billion pound industry, and football’s importance in developing cultural identities. Activities may include lectures, workshops, visits to either Old Trafford (Manchester United) or the Etihad Stadium (Manchester City), and a visit to a sporting event. ‘The Brontes’: This unit examines the lives and works of the Bronte sisters; Emily, Charlotte and Anne. We will visit the Bronte Parsonage at Haworth to gain an understanding of the influence of the landscape of the north-west on their writing. The academic focus will be the literary significance of the Brontes, and the importance of their environment on their writing. ‘From the Beatles to Oasis: Popular Music in British Culture’: This unit examines the sociological importance of popular music. In the 1960s, Liverpool, as the home of the Beatles, played a vital role in the emergence of ‘pop’ music. However, the 1970s to the present day have seen Manchester become the most important musical city in the UK. Activities may include lectures, seminars/workshops, plus visits to the Beatles Museum (Liverpool), and a visit to a musical event. All students will take 'Manchester: Original/Modern' in week 1, but then select either 'The "Real" Downton Abbey' or 'Worlds of Sport' in week 2, and either 'The Brontes' or 'From The Beatles to Oasis' in week 3. For a group of 10 students or more, we offer fee discount.
