Early Career Researcher workshop

If you are an early career researcher and your research lies within one of the many fields of healthy living research, be it Life Sciences, Psychology, Sport & Exercise Sciences, Public Health and Epidemiology, Medicine or the Allied Health professions, we invite you to join the Universitas 21 career development workshop taking place at the University of Birmingham from 13 to 15 December 2011. At this U21 Early Career Researcher (ECR) workshop, participants will have the opportunity to network with global peers while gaining valuable skills and training in critical aspects of research career development, such as media and communication skills, journal editing, licensing and spin-offs, grant writing, and career development. Training will be conducted by academics and industry professionals with experience in these skills and research career development training.

Graduate Research Conference on Food

The third U21 Graduate Research Conference takes place this month at the University of Nottingham’s Malaysia Campus. The theme “Food” represents an interdisciplinary topic that allows diverse and complementary research specialisms to contribute to solving some of the most important questions that face humankind. It follows on from the very successful GRCs on “Water” in Birmingham 2008, and “Future Cities” in 2009. A major objective of universities across the U21 network is to ensure that postgraduate students appreciate the value of belonging to rich intellectual communities in which a multiplicity of research is being carried out. The chosen topic will allow the U21 postgraduate students to integrate science, engineering, health, social science, business, humanities and possibly other subjects into a themed series of talks, posters and networking activities during the conference. This will include professional development activities on the nature and challenges of interdisciplinary research.

A report will appear in the U21 newsletter later in the year.

2011 AGM a great success

Last month, representatives from all 23 Universitas 21 universities met at the Annual Presidential and Network Meetings, superbly hosted by the University of New South Wales. Three days of meetings, workshops and discussions took place, resulting in some key decisions being made about the future of the network, the way in which it will operate and the strategic aims and focus of activity over the coming years. Alongside the Presidential meetings there were a number of other meetings by U21 collaborative groups including the Heads of Administration, Marketing representatives and International Directors as well as the first U21 Early Career Researchers’ Workshop.

Reports from many of these meetings will appear in the forthcoming U21 Newsletter.

New venture for U21 Business Deans

A new venture, co-ordinated by U21 Business Deans and headed up by Professor Tim Brailsford (Queensland) and Dr Chris Earley (Connecticut) is being developed to benefit doctoral students and their research advisors across the U21 network. The plan is to reunite U21 member business, commerce and economic programmes with both a learning and research focus through the creation of an annual U21 Doctoral Research Consortium (DRC) where participants will address global issues such as entrepreneurship and innovation, global technology, economic systems just to name a few examples.

This is still in the early stages of planning, but anyone interested in collaborating or finding out more should contact Dr Earley (Chris.Earley@business.uconn.edu)

Are your students registered properly for the URC?!

With exams fast approaching for many students and the long summer holidays for those in the northern hemisphere, students who have been selected for the U21 URC this year must not forget to ensure that they are properly registered! URC participants are not officially accepted until the student goes online and completes his or her details, so make sure that any of your students have remembered to do this as it may affect visa applications and accommodation arrangements!

University of Birmingham lecturer to visit Connecticut’s Global House

The University of Connecticut is pleased to announce that University of Birmingham lecturer, Clelia Boscolo (Italian), will be living in their Global House next year, where she will teach a one credit course to residents each semester. She will also teach in the university’s Italian department.

International Leadership Conference at Nottingham

The University of Nottingham is hosting the second International Leadership Conference which will take place from 21 to 24 November 2011 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. This exclusive masterclass event is aimed at senior managers and leaders from higher education institutions from across the globe.

During the four-day programme delegates will have the opportunity to explore challenges and opportunities around the internationalisation of higher education. This will include international leadership, developing university strategy, different approaches to internationalisation, enterprise, commercialising research, developing international partnerships, global governance and marketing on a global stage.

The majority of the conference will be delivered in Kuala Lumpur although delegates will also visit the University of Nottingham’s Malaysia Campus in Semenyih (30km outside of KL).

Before too long, Universitas 21 will have a brand new website! The designs have been finalised and we’re now working hard to ensure that the content is all in the correct place, the links all work, the photos look beautiful and everything looks just right. We hope to be able to launch the new site at the end of June, so watch this space!
